The famous Naschmarkt flea market
The flea market at Naschmarkt is a true Viennese institution. It is the most famous and one of the largest flea markets in Austria. For decades, it has attracted bargain hunters, collectors and curious visitors. You will meet locals, hardcore fans from all over the country and tourists alike. It is located at the outer end of the Naschmarkt along the “Linke Wienzeile.”
Originally located at the “Am Hof” square, the market moved to its current spot in 1977. Since then, it has become a popular Saturday meeting point. It’s not just a place to trade, but also a spot for social connection and sustainability. Because it is so unique, it has also become a must-see sight in Vienna.
What to expect at the Naschmarkt flea market?
The Naschmarkt flea market is famous for its curiosities. At around 400 stalls, you can find almost anything. The selection ranges from high-quality antiques, porcelain, and art to boxes of vinyl records, old comics, and cool vintage fashion. You will also find plenty of “krimskrams” (knick-knacks) and quirky items from old house clearances.
Many locals come here to stroll around and buy clothes, shoes, or accessories. The mix of items is huge and changes every week. Pro Tip: If you want the best deals, you have to get up early. The earlier you arrive, the better your chances of finding a real bargain.
Trade, haggle, or even of a self-dealer?
Bargaining (haggling) is part of the experience! A good trick is to start by offering about half of the initial price and then meet somewhere in the middle.
If you want to sell things yourself, you need to reserve a spot through the Vienna Market Office (MA 59). There are paid spots in different sizes (e.g., small 1.50 x 2 meters or large 3 x 2 meters). Important: Private individuals without a business license are only allowed to sell three times a year. This ensures that the items on offer are always fresh and different.
Opening times of the flea market at the Naschmarkt
Generally, the flea market at Naschmarkt is held every Saturday throughout the year, even on most public holidays. The regular hours are from 06:30 AM to 03:00 PM. However, there are a few important exceptions to keep in mind: The market does not take place if a Saturday falls on December 25th, December 26th, January 1st, or January 6th.
